CBD oil and other cannabis-based products have become more mainstream in terms of medicine and healing lately; but cannabis has been used to treat ailments since ancient times. Cannabis has been used throughout millenia to treat ailments, and strengthen the body’s natural functions. The ancient Chinese people were the first ones to have a record of using cannabis plants for relief and healthcare. These records date back to as far as 2,900 BCE.

Chinese Medicine

The oldest record of cannabis is in Ancient China. In 2,900 BCE, Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi referenced the plant as a popular medicine that “possessed both yin and yang.” Along with ginseng and ephedra, Emperor Chen Nung was credited with fully embracing these medicinal plants. He brought them into the mainstream practices for healing. Chen Nung is often referred to as the Father of Chinese medicine. Records of Chinese medicine in 1,500 BCE. show that it was popular in medical practices for a number of ailments. The plant was used to relieve pain, insomnia, inflammation, and digestive issues. In 200 CE, Chinese doctor Hua T’o reportedly used cannabis products as an anesthetic for surgeries. A record from 1578 also named the plant as a curative for vomiting, infections, hemorrhages, dysentery.

Healing in Exodus

The book of Exodus in the Old Testament (30:22-23) speaks of an anointing oil made from soaking cannabis, cinnamon, and other ingredients into olive oil. The original Hebrew version of the recipe refers to the plant as kaneh-bosem; the word for the cannabis plant at the time. The anointed were cleansed and healed with the oil. According to historical estimates, the book of Exodus would have taken place around 1450 BCE.

Ancient Egyptians also used cannabis for its healing properties. King Ramesses II, who died in 1213 BCE, had cannabis pollen on his body. Records of Ancient Egyptian prescriptions include the plant for glaucoma and inflammation treatments. It was also used for gynecological treatments. When Napoleon invaded Egypt in 1799, the scientific expedition team within his forces brought cannabis plants back to France. They studied it for it’s pain relieving qualities.

Hemp was one of the most important items in any herbalist’s medicine cabinet, according to the records of the time. The Jamestown settlers brought the plant to America in the early 1600’s. In 1762, Virginia supplemented hemp farmers for growing it, and even penalized farmers who did not grow it. Even George Washington’s personal agricultural records denote that he regularly grew and tended to hemp and marijuana plants on his land. He was very interested in the medicinal qualities of the plant, even creating his own tinctures and oils. Up until the early 1900’s, hemp was used for medical uses in America. The plant was instrumental in helping with pain relief during World War I, and was one of the chief crops grown in during the war, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Over 60,000 pounds of cannabis were grown annually during this time.

Modern Uses

In 1992, the Endocannabinoid system was discovered in the human body. This system has receptors that are strengthened by cannabinoids that are found in cannabis. The Endocannabinoid system works in tandem with our immune system and nervous system to help improve the body’s health. CBD Oil feeds endocannabinoid receptors in the body, which can also help build immunity.
